About:

8 februari 1986

Eefje made her stagedebut in 2000 with a performance at a local festival in Moordrecht. She also started writing her own music and joined a school project setting poems by Leo Vroman to music. In 2002 she got picked by local radio where she got invited to sing her then English material. With that she recorded a demo that took her to win the local talent hunt and a performance at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht. In interviews Eefje stated however that she had no ambition to become a performing artist but rather a songwriter. After highschool she continued her study at the Rockacademy in Tilburg and joined in with Skiggy Rapz and SAM.

To het own amazement she won the 2009 talent hunt Grote Prijs van Nederland 2009. In advance of the finals she perfomed ‘Hartslag’ in national TV. After a long period of touring (amongst others with Lucky Fonz III) she started working in her debut ‘De Koek’. The album found large critical acclaim when released in 2011. In 2012 she started recording on her second album, one that would be quit different and more atmospheric then her debut. It was released in 2013. Critical acclaim again followed. For her third album Eefje moved to Barcelona to write new songs. Recording the album followed in Belgium, France and her hometown Utrecht. The result is much more electronic then her second album but keeps close to the 'stream-of-consciousness' sort of singing.

After the album Eefje moves to Ghent, Belgium. In 2017 en 2018 she does some suprise shows in small venues with already show a more electronic sound. In 2019 she starts recording her fourth album that is released early 2020. In the same year she goes on a European tour with Belgian band Balthazar.

What do we think:

DB: Making Dutch pop music has proved very difficult. Soon it becomes pretentious, pompous or bombastic. Dutch also tend to be quite close to filling their production to the brim. Eefje is a breath of fresh air for that matter. Witty, small, musical and catchy. And definitely popmusic. Her first album is easily accessible and has a variety of styles. Her second album is an icy excercise with her voice and the music almost organically merging. Her voice and music weaving a snowy landscape. Also for non Dutch speaking people worth a listen.
