David was born as the youngest child (of three) in Almeria. David Bisbal left school early and worked in a platinum and flower nursery. He was encouraged by his colleagues to audition for a music contest and he initially became part of Orquesta Expresiones where he continued singing and dancing. After three years of extensive touring he auditioned in October 2001 for the first edition of Operación Triunfo (Spanish equivalent of Star Academy) where he was one of the 16 finalists. The grand prize was the chance of representing Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest. He came second in the final losing to Rosa López. She went on to sing ‘Europe's Living a Celebration’ in the ESC 2002 competition ending seventh. Bisbal signed a contract with Vale Music Record label and released his first album recorded in Miami under the title ‘Corazón Latino’ with compositions by Colombian songwriter Kike Santander. The album became 7 times platinum by summer 2002 after having topped the Spanish charts. Sales in Latin America however were even higher boosting Bisbal overnight in the Latin market. On September 3, 2003, he won the Latin Grammies held in Miami from the category "Best New Artist". During the event, He sang ‘Angels’, in a bilingual English / Spanish duet with Jessica Simpson. In February 2004, he released his second album entitled "Bulería" again produced and written Kike Santander.

His third album ‘Premonición’ was more a cooperation with Santander and Bisbal both writing songs.  It achieved enough sales to be certified as 5 times platinum with sales over 400,000 copies in Spain alone. The song ‘Silencio’ became a huge hit in the Netherlands in a translated cover version called ‘Jij bent zo’ by singer Jeroen van den Boom. His 2009 album ‘Sin Mirar Atrás’ saw a break-up with Santander. The album featured again songs from his own hand and some written by others. The album got an international release in 2010. Also in 2010 David was featured in Spanish Version of the FIFA 2010 Official World Cup song ‘Waving Flag’ with K'naan. The same year his Daughter Ella was born.

What do we think:

DB: David Bisbal is considered a successful crossover artist in the United States by the record company. But his commercial success and being the darling of the teenage girls also gives him a problem with the music critics at home who have a hard time taking him serious. Indeed, Bisbal represents the commercial side of Spanish pop but unlike artists like Enrique Iglesias he did not (yet) made a complete knee fall towards the Latin market and still tries to incorporate Spanish musical elements in his music. For the purists under us Bisbal is much to radio friendly but none can deny the boy obviously has a talent, ambition and a drive to become a success. His third album 'Premonición' is untill now his best attempt to also deliver an artisticaly valuable album.
