Mid nineties the Italian underground starts mixing Italo and other popular international electronic music influences with rock and sometimes jazz. Groups like Blu Vertigo, Baustelle, Le Vibrazioni and Delta V are exponents of this scene. More grungelike alternative rock comes from trio Verdena. Subsonica (formed in 1996) gained real success in 2000 by playing the San Remo Music Festival. This gave a push for the other bands to break through to the Italian mainstream. Established artists like Alice, Gianna Nannini and Antonella Ruggieri incorporated the music style or even recorded with them.

San Remo 2000 was, besides Subsonica, a fruitfull year for breaking new artists to the main public. And Carmen Consoli had a hit with her pop-rock 60’s style song In bianco e nero after which her popularity grew. Already popular as a performer of songs by Ramazotti and Jovanotti, Irene Grandi also boosted her career at San Remo 2000 with a Vasco Rossi song. She became second. Winner this year was the Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel with the song Sentimento. Avion Travel gives a new injection to the Canzone Napoletana and folk culture. Another artist who follows this road is Gianmarie Testa.

Also popular in this decennium is Cesare Cremonini who was first the leadsinger of Lùnapop. They brief but huge succes between 2000 en 2002 after which he went solo.
New popular artists are Gigi D'Alessio, Paola e Chiara, Luciano Ligabue, Tiziano Ferro, Leda Battisti and Anna Tatangelo.
